Golf club designers must take special considerations when designing ladies’ golf clubs.
In the past, they would often just choose a different color scheme for the men’s clubs, and call them ladies’ clubs. Many women golfers struggle to swing hard enough to get the ball airborne. Clubs with the right shaft, and a well-designed club head with a low center of gravity can help ladies get the ball in the air.
There Are Alternatives to Long Irons
With a slower swing speed, it is more advantageous to carry more fairway woods and hybrid clubs than long irons. With Long irons (1 iron through 4 iron) it is hard to get the ball into the air, but woods and hybrids are much easier. You might even want to try out a 9 wood, which should go approximately the same distance as a 4 iron, but is almost certainly easier to hit.
An Example
Cleveland has a line of fairway woods called the W Series Offset fairway woods. They are priced very reasonably, and Cleveland is a great company. These particular clubs are offset, which means that they help golfers who struggle with slices and fades. They are specially designed for women, and have graphite shafts with a low kick point. This means that the shaft is more flexible towards the club head, and will help players with lower swing speed to get more club head speed (and will cause the ball to go higher and farther). The club head is made of steel, which is cheaper than titanium. Titanium is lighter than steel, but a lighter club head isn’t always an advantage. Sometimes women should use a heavier club head with shorter shaft. A club with a shorter shaft, and a heavier club head feels the same as a club with a longer shaft and a lighter club head.
Players with slower swing speeds are at a disadvantage if they don’t have the right golf clubs.
There are things that golf club designers can do to help women get the ball in the air, and hit straighter, with more consistent shots.
