MacGregor golf clubs have been languishing for the last few years. Now, Golfsmith has bought the brand practically for the low, low price of $1.75 million, made in 8 easy payments of $218,750, with no payments until May, 2010. It sounds like a deal on a big screen TV at the local electronics store.
That’s a very good deal for Golfsmith. If each of their 70 stores sells only about $25,000 worth of MacGregor clubs over the next 3 years, MacGregor will be a free and clear brand going forward.
Golfsmith also owns Lynx golf clubs, and they are very well priced, quality clubs sold on their website. Hopefully, MacGregor golf clubs will also be sold at a good price, and the 112 year history of the company will be honored and maintained by Golfsmith.
MacGregor was purchased by Greg Norman in 2007, and hasn’t done much but drain his wallet since. MacGregor is a private company, so no one knows for sure what the numbers are, but I’m sure it’s not been pretty.
The Golfsmith website has already added a MacGregor store. It has a “store” for each of the big golf companies, like TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist, etc. The smaller companies don’t get their own store.
You can find out about some of MacGregor’s technologies, like the no-weld club face (Cup Face 360° Technology), and their special shaft called the MacGregor Quadra Action Technology, by checking out the Golfsmith website.
